From a former article, the strong contouring a preference for some framework, that contains the Symbols was from this statement: "We do not act on the matter itself, we act on what it represents."

Consciousness as the web of seeing through Symbols. 
By forming societies, we formed symbols within.
At the very core of meaning we operate with these Symbols.
We would also have classes of Symbols. etc.

The observer of the systems, by studying if it has "consciousness" one is ascribing it qualities through its own causal nexus.

Ant colonies should not be different than our in many aspects. It is a problem of scale, while it is multi-agent synergies and self- domestication in the Environment.

Did they made/use some of their Symbols?
How would I know they have such views and not merely mechanical means?

They own their world representation at least. They have the colony concept, home...these quantitative aspects should be studied across all levels of scales, of emergence, of systems. From example, from cells, yeast to humans, and to LLMs, or other systems (non-biologicalsemiotics).
